How to use an AI agent
Your first 10 minutes, in plain English. No sign-up needed to read this.
- 1
Pick one tool to start with
Don't try to learn all of them at once. If you have no idea, start with ChatGPT — it's the friendliest first date. Open it in a browser tab. That's it, no download needed.
- 2
Give it a small, real task
Something you'd actually do this week: "Help me write a birthday message for my sister who just changed jobs." Or: "Explain how a Roth IRA works like I'm 12." Small and real beats big and clever.
- 3
Talk to it like a friend, not a search bar
Full sentences. Say what you want, who it's for, and what you don't want. The more context you give, the better the answer. You can't break it by being too chatty.
- 4
Ask it to try again
If the first answer's off, tell it: "shorter please," or "more casual," or "try again but funnier." A good agent is happy to redo. This back-and-forth is the whole game.
- 5
Stay in control of the big stuff
When you get to agents that actually do things — book, buy, send — always read the summary before you tap "yes." A good agent will pause and ask. If one doesn't, that's your cue to slow down.
- 6
Double-check anything that really matters
AI can sound very confident and still be wrong (that's called a hallucination). For medical, legal, or money questions, treat the answer as a starting point, not the final word.
That's honestly it. Ten minutes in and you'll have a feel for it. When you want a tool matched to how you actually live, take our quick quiz.
